Fable After Dark: Two Plates and a Drink for £20

A deep red cocktail in a coupe glass between plates of charred corn ribs and sliced chicken inasal with pickled carrot, on a rustic wooden table.

Some evenings call for a long, slow read of the menu. Others just need dinner sorted. Fable After Dark is built for the second kind: any two small plates and a drink for £20, on Station Approach in Kew.

It comes from the same kitchen and uses the same plates as the full evening menu. The only difference is that the decisions have been narrowed down to a handful of dishes that work well together.

How It Works

Pick any two small plates from Chicken Inasal, Honey Chorizo, Burrata with Roasted Tomatoes and Corn Ribs. Then choose a drink to go with them: a 175ml glass of house wine, a Peroni or Corona, Kopparberg Crisp Apple, Peroni 0% or our Devil's Diablo Mocktail.

Fancy going a little bigger? Flat Iron Steak or Chilli & Garlic Prawns can be swapped in for £2 each, and any cocktail from the list can replace the included drink for £6.

Putting Two Plates Together

The four plates are different enough that almost any pair works, but a couple of combinations stand out. Chicken Inasal, marinated in lemongrass, ginger and annatto oil and served with pickled atchara, sits well beside the Burrata with Roasted Tomatoes: one warm and sharp, the other cool and creamy. Honey Chorizo and Corn Ribs go the other way, sticky-sweet chorizo next to sweetcorn in sriracha mayo, and both are happiest with a cold beer.

Ordering as a pair? Choose four different plates between you and share them across the table. It's the closest the set menu gets to a proper sharing spread, for £20 each.

Going Premium

The two premium plates are worth the extra £2. The Flat Iron Steak is served with our housemade chimichurri, and the Chilli & Garlic Prawns are peeled prawns in chilli and garlic olive oil, served with sourdough for mopping up. Either makes a natural centrepiece next to a lighter plate like the Burrata.

If You're Upgrading the Drink

The £6 upgrade opens up the full cocktail list. A Spicy Margarita, made with Jose Cuervo Silver, Cointreau, lime, agave and jalapeño and finished with salt and Tajín, picks up the heat in the Corn Ribs. A Negroni of Tanqueray, Martini Rosso, Campari and orange has the bitterness to stand up to the Honey Chorizo. For something softer, The Fable, our house cocktail of amaretto, Frangelico, lemon and egg white, sits well with the Burrata.
